Knockvologan Garden: A Wildlife Sanctuary in the making.

Perched on the remnants of a glacial moraine, overlooking the Iona Sound and enveloped by sheep-grazed pasture, Knockvologan garden emerges as a young production garden and vibrant wildlife sanctuary.

Despite the relentless winds from all directions, the garden boasts sheltered pockets where diverse flora flourish. We have conscientiously designed it to foster habitats for wildlife, cherishing the presence of hedgehogs, adders, spiders, birds, insects, bats and amphibians, thereby transforming it into a thriving hub of biodiversity.

Highlights of Knockvologan Garden include a spacious fruit cage, a recently constructed self-built greenhouse, a charming heptagonal guest bothy, and two expansive ponds. These features not only enhance the garden's appeal but also serve as vital ecosystems, enriching the landscape with their presence.

New Greenhouse

At the moment we are building a greenhouse to grow our own tomatoes and other delicacies.

Resident Saskia McCracken just spent two weeks writing on her nonfiction debut about underappreciated wildlife, Awful Creatures: Encounters with Britain’s Unlovable Animals. As part of this residency, Miek is in the proces of translating some of her poems to Dutch.

New work from Miek Zwamborn & Rutger Emmelkamp with music by Rufus Isabel Elliot

Dedicated to the area around our home in Knockvologan on the southwest tip of Mull, Quavering Tongues explores this natural environment as a culture-generating mesh of entanglements.

Through use of multiple disciplines and sensory techniques, we carefully tune into the delicate intricacies of land, sea and their inhabitants both past and present. In doing so, we try to reveal hidden motives that inspire speculative scenarios for a future where we acknowledge the complex and symbiotic relationships that exist between the natural world and us.
